Five Avon Lake High School students put together two videos on what a school resource officer (SRO) does and landed the school’s SRO program $300.
Carolyn Coniam, Patricia Hickey, Garrett McEntire, Yailin Soto and Sean Yates, all students in Bridget Elias’ TV production class, submitted two videos, each under 2 minutes, set up as public service announcements.
The spots, which have been running on Avon Lake Cable Television’s school station, Channel 98, demonstrate how the school’s SRO, Det. Brian Hurd, has a positive impact on the school, community and district. Yates' spot included an interview with Hurd. The second spot was a video with a voiceover.
The contest was sponsored by the Ohio School Resource Officers Association (OSROA). On July 26, Officer Todd Bennett of the Pepper Pike Police Department and Northeast Ohio representative of OSROA, presented the students with certificates, mentioning that it was the first time the OSROA had two first-place winners, and they both happened to be from Avon Lake.
Hurd complemented the certificates with movie gift cards.
Bennett said approximately 40 schools in the Northeast Ohio district, which includes Lorain and Ashtabula counties and Youngstown, have SROs.
Coniam, Hickey, McEntire and Soto were responsible for one of the PSAs while Yates completed a second clip alone. The students spent about two weeks on each announcement, interviewing Hurd and taping him as an SRO.
